What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are organic compounds produced by a wide variety of plants — not just cannabis. They are responsible for the scent of pine trees, the flavour of citrus peel, the calming aroma of lavender, and the peppery bite of black pepper. In nature, terpenes serve multiple functions: they can attract pollinators, repel pests, and protect the plant from environmental stress.

In cannabis, terpenes are produced in the same glandular trichomes that generate cannabinoids like THC and CBD. Also found in: Hops, thyme, lemongrass, mangoes.
In cannabis: Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in modern cannabis, often comprising over 50% of a strain's total terpene content. It is most strongly associated with the "couch-lock" sensation — the heavy, body-focused relaxation that consumers frequently report from myrcene-rich cultivars. 2. Limonene

Aroma: Citrus, lemon, orange, fresh.

It appears prominently in strains with "lemon," "orange," or "citrus" in their names — though the presence of those words does not always indicate high limonene content. 3. Pinene

In cannabis: Pinene exists in two forms — alpha-pinene and beta-pinene — both of which appear in cannabis. It is associated with alertness and focus in consumer reports, and it is the terpene most responsible for the classic "pine" aroma found in many traditional strains. 4. Caryophyllene

7. Terpinolene

In cannabis: Terpinolene is less common as a dominant terpene but appears as a significant component in several popular sativa-leaning strains, where it contributes a complex, multi-layered aroma. It is prominent in Jack Herer, Durban Poison, and Golden Goat. It often accompanies pinene and limonene in hazey, uplifting cultivars.
